Great Apes:
A Uganda Adventure

"When you realize the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future."

- Dian Fossey

Winston Churchill coined the term ‘Pearl of Africa’ for Uganda – a country that captured his heart and imagination with its verdant beauty and astounding biodiversity.

Great Apes: A Uganda Adventure endeavours to not only showcase these attributes, but also to immerse you in wildlife experiences that are emotionally uplifting.

With the expert guidance of Grant Nel, Last Chance Safaris offers small, private groups the opportunity to explore a country that epitomises the soul of the continent.

Your journey, like the Great Nile River, starts at Africa’s largest body of water - Lake Victoria. A boat cruise to Magamba Swamp may introduce you to the bizarre Shoebill Stork, but also represents a conservation success story where fishermen are now the guardians of this avian paradise.

A short flight will take you to the heart of Murchison Falls National Park. Forty years ago, the ravages of civil war decimated the wildlife – but you would never know it today. Bursting with life this park represents the power of tourism conservation and is now a ‘Big 5’ wildlife destination.

Spectacular scenery is crowned by the thunderous Murchison Falls squeezing the power of the Nile through a narrow gorge.

Next stop is the Kyambura Reserve of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This is Uganda’s flagship park and is home to an incredible array of animals and birds….and the Kyambura Chimpanzee community.

Morning treks to spend time with this community are complemented by varied game drives and boat excursions on the renown Kazinga Channel.

A drive to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest will hopefully find tree-climbing lions enroute before embarking on a guided walk through this montane rainforest and your first taste of what to expect in the coming days.

Two treks will endeavour to introduce you to the family life of the Mountain Gorilla. Giant in stature, gentle and caring in manner, these apes will leave you with a lump in your throat and smile on your face.

Mgahinga National Park is home to gorillas and another rare primate – the Golden Monkey.

With arguably some of the most picturesque montane forest that straddles three countries, the trek to find Golden Monkeys is as much about spending time with this delightful primate as it is about being embraced by the verdant beauty of Nature.

Your adventure culminates in the tiny nation with a big heart – Rwanda. A city tour delivers a stark reminder of the history of this country, but with the enormously positive caveat of what is achievable through the Rwandan philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’ – humanity!
